Aubergine

Designers are focusing on aubergine and deep plum in fashion this fall, and I predict this color will have a jump in popularity in the home as well. Colors like aubergine may not leap to mind, yet are perfect in the Chinoiserie room. Aubergine actually has blue, red, green, and yellow in it, so any of these colors work well with it. In this Mario Buatta room above, the colors pop against the lacquered aubergine walls. The black and gold lacquer Chinoiserie secretary is such an elegant choice. Aubergine would work well with many Chinoiserie looks. Celadon fabrics or porcelains would be lovely with aubergine. I would love to use celadon silk taffeta curtains against aubergine walls. Blue and white Chinese porcelain would be wonderful against the dark walls. For a more modern Hollywood Regency look, pair the aubergine with crisp white trim and Blanc de Chine porcelains. If you are looking for a stunning aubergine paint, my favorite is Brinjal by Farrow & Ball.

I prefer black to aubergine. But isn't it a very wonderful feel to roll the word 'aubergine' off the tongue?

Home Before Dark-It is the best word! Yesterday I used the word "pouf" which is another great design word.

Love this look and can proudly say I did do an aubergine room when I was a designer, maybe I should go back and tell them to add some celadon? Love the Girls Bedroom on earlier post as well-so sophisticated and timeless.

Sande-Thanks-both those rooms have great colors. Celadon is one of my favorite colors. I would love to use the celadon and aubergine in a dining room.

the aubergine is even better because it's lacquered. so dramatic. loves it!

Kitty-You are so right-I think with deep colored walls, some sheen to the paint is the way to go.

I painted by youngest daughters room an aubergine / plum color by Ralph Lauren. It is dark & moody like her..lol..

I so love that photo. I think my heart skipped a beat.

I love the idea of pairing aubergine with celadon. C&B actually has some great pillows right now in those colors that would be absolutely lovely (and very budget-friendly!).

Dumbwit Tellher-A really elegant room. I wish Mario Buatta would do a book.

I love the luxurious feel of aubergine. There are so many possibilities -- I must say, I love it with gold! I could see it done in a really chic, little bathroom with chunky hardware and bold details...

I might have to write that down for future reference.

Wonderful post!
