Chinese Red Paint Colors

A follower of Chinoiserie Chic has asked for help on paint colors to paint a library in Chinese red. She correctly points out that most reds are too dark or too orange. Red is a difficult color to get right. These two paint colors are perfect if you are looking for a great Chinese red. I have used and love both. The first three photos are Farrow & Ball Blazer 212. Not only is F & B the best paint anywhere period, this color is glorious! It is a fresh Chinese red that interior designers cannot get enough of.

Chili Pepper by Benjamin Moore 2004-20 shown in these next two photos is a really really really deep coral that is the ideal Chinese Red. The touch of pink in it makes it incredibly flattering and dramatic, especially at night when you are most often using a library.

Hope this helps-let me know how it turns out!

  1. We used BM's Deep Rose in our den in a glossy color and we love it - Always get the nicest compliments on the color! Worth a look into...

  2. Nice! I love red bathrooms, and I am particularly enamored of the sconces in the last photo...are those wooden faucet knobs?!? Awesome!

  3. Kitty-That's a wonderful powder room. The faucets are marble.

  4. Great choices! You're absolutely right: red IS tricky.

My old study was painted out in BM's Morroccan Red and I really liked it though it may be a bit more orange than your reader is going for (though I personally prefer red's to veer on the side of orange rather than blue as I REALLY dislike maroon).

  5. Averill-So right, stick to reds with orange, not blue. Maroon is so wrong.

  9. Love these shots. Our living room is in BM Hawthorn yellow and I want to paint shutters or a small furniture piece in a Chinese Red. Which of the two suggestions would be best. The Chili pepper? What about a Chinese lacquer red?

  11. Silk Lining by Martha Stewart for Glidden is the best Vintage Vamp Chinese Red Color, in my opinion.
