More Kelley Proxmire

Black walls have been a design trend for a while now. Every time I see a room with black walls, I seem to ask myself these questions:

-Is it a look I could live with?
-What did the designer do or would I do to bring it to life?
-Would it work with Chinoiserie?

This wonderful bedroom by D.C. interior designer Kelley Proxmire is probably the finest example of a room with black walls for my taste. First, the room has lots of white including the curtains, bed linens, upholstery, carpet, ceiling, trim, lampshades, picture mats, seashells, and fireplace. I love the punches of orange. The Chinoiserie pieces including the Chinese Chippendale mirror by Baker, Knapp, and Tubbs and the bamboo stool by Hickory Chair are stunning. I would have to find a place for the three Chinoiserie giclees below by my favorite artist Harrison Howard. I would also love to incorporate a fine piece or two of Blanc de Chine on white brackets on the walls that would really pop against the black. Notice the flat screen television hidden in the bed-brilliant! This room was from the Spring 2007 Design House in D.C.

That first picture is really beautiful! On my comp the walls are looking dark brown though? It's definitely working though :)

They look more dark, deep brown to me as well. We can get the idea though and it is stunning!

On my Mac, it is black and beautiful. I have a black room. It's a small library that I upholstered in satin/matte striped fabric and with its three doors and a set of double windows, I made it a cocoon of a room by draping the doorways. I also used various sheens/shades of black in the room and the ceiling is metallic gold. It is one of my favorite rooms in my house. I like the look so well, that I plan to paint the interior of my stairwell to the second floor black matte/satin stripes of paint and paint the 7 doors glossy black. It's only paint, right?

that's beautiful...but i have nightmares of walking into my rentals and facing black painted walls, so i hope none of my tenants see this!

I love the fireplace with the giant coral and with the black walls surrounding it, it's truly a showstopper.

I too wish I could be brave enough to paint my walls black. Maybe I'll finally get the courage to do it sooner now that I've seen this post! Love the pops of color with the black walls!

wow, this is amazing. I love it. You're right- when you "take a step back"and see the light carpeting, white chairs, artwork, etc. the room is not at all too dark. Really like it! (and on my Mac the walls look black, for what it's worth!).

Dagny-I saw the room in person and it is definitely black-I bet you don't have a Mac.

Scott-It is stunning.

Home Before Dark-I bet your home is wonderful. We did all black doors in a friend's apartment and it is great looking. Especially works if your interior doors are nothing special. It gives them some character.

Kitty-Too funny-yes, that would be a nightmare!

Averill-The fireplace treatment is gorgeous.

Proper Hunt-I agree, this is black that works for me.

Southern Aspirations-Yes, the black here is sophisticated but not gloomy.

I especially love the drama of the first picture. That glossy black dresser against the deep clack walls is so glamorous.

Leah-The first photo is my favorite as well-especially that Chinoiserie stool!
