Chinoiserie Walls-Treillage

A unique and fabulous idea for interior walls is treillage, also called latticework. The use of lattice dates back hundreds of years for exterior use for vining plants and is most famous at Versailles. Interior Chinoiserie lattice became quite the thing in the 1930s with the Hollywood Regency style. See Elsie de Wolfe's Trellis Room at the Colony Club in New York below. I know we love lattice patterned wallpaper-why not the real thing? These are from the California firm Accents of France. I especially like the example below where they have chosen a Chinese Chippendale style inset with mirrors as wainscoting and used a Chinoiserie wallpaper above. Brilliant. Some Chinoiserie ideas for using treillage inside:

1. Walls painted in peacock blue, Chinese red, bright yellow, or deep pink with black or white treillage over.

2. On a ceiling.

3. As Chinese Chippendale wainscoting with or without mirrors.

4. A pagoda surround for a door.

5. On the walls of a bedroom to become an indoor garden or birdcage.

6. A sunroom is of course a natural.

7. In an entry over mirrored walls.

Hope I've started your creative juices flowing.

I just saw the first lattice pattern at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Talk about history repeating its self.
