Chinoiserie and Chintz

House Beautiful instagrammed this stunning room the other day. Can you guess the year?

a. An upcoming issue
b. 2003
c. 1992
d. 1981

If you guessed 1981, you were right. This is from House Beautiful, October 1981. The decade giveaway for the 80s is all that floral chintz. The chintz is Brunschwig & Fils Westbury Bouquet. I still adore chintz. It is timeless and pairs beautifully with Chinoiserie. Designers like Charlotte Moss, Mario Buatta, and Joe Nye have always loved chintz and Miles Redd and others have predicted a huge comeback for chintz. The key today is to use it as an accent and not all matchy matchy. Here are some examples.

  1. I love chintz and it has been a while since I have used it ( I had a sofa slipcover made.) It is really timeless as you have shown in these fab images!

  2. As a gardener, I always loved the romantic florals of chintz. I have chintz curtains in my office that I put up in 1990 and I still love them. And yes, I did get the correct year.

My local food coop now offers "senior" discounts if you are over 62 and the cashier reminded me I could use my discount if I wanted. I had to laugh. Just yesterday I was demonstrating against the war and now I'm getting a senior discount at my food coop. The cashier—a young 50 year old—said it was a just and right continuum. Gotta' love a college town. Still love the chintz!
